On several Boards and Forums since the first quarter of 2007 I have been reading an increasing number of posts advising of increased prices and reduction of availability of reloading components such as powder, primers, and brass. While this situation is apparently most critical when it comes to .223 ( 5.56 ), 308 ( 7.62x51 ), and other heavily shot calibres I am wondering if it is just a situation at the big dealers or does it effect the reloading suppliers in general?

Below is one recent example.

Primer Shortage Hits Home 12:32 AM 6/12/2007

So I am down @ Gander oogleing the hardware as usual. I picked up a spare mag for my trusty 45 XD. I then went over and got a bag of 45 brass and a pound of Power Pistol. Life's good.
Next I go to the counter and ask for some Win Large Pistol primers. The guy stands there looking at the primer rack, which I can't see from my vantage point. So I say some CCI's will do. No sweat. Again, he stands there looking all over the shelf. At this point I walk around where I can see the shelf, and it's all but bare!!

There are precious few cartons of primers there, but there really are no large pistol primers. None. The guy asks another guy if there are any in the back. That guy says that no there aren't, and Federal had already sent out a message that there won't be any for the rest of the year!! Military production is taking all their energy.

I ended up buying the very last large pistol primers in the store, a lone flat of 100 Remingtons. I was at least going to buy a few flats, but that one was all there was!!

WOW! That's all I can say. But if I need to cut back a bit so the troops have plenty of bullets, I can do that. I remember I never had a full combat load of ammo when I was there. When we rolled into Baghdad,I had three magazines full of 5.56, and one of those was all tracers 'cause that's all I could get my hands on.

I hope our guys have more now. It's just damn comforting to know you are loaded to the gills, and it's damn disconcerting to know that the whole Army can only spare you 90 rnds when your combat load is 210.

That's why I carried the 240 EVERYWHERE I went!!! but I digress....

End post quote.

Anyone have more details they can share?

Pistol primers are still available in some places...try finding large rifle though.
