Today Oly recieved in an M4 carbine for repair. The right side ear of the front pivot pin lug had sheared off. Upon inspection Oly found out it was NOT an Olympic manufactured gun OR LOWER!! The lower is clearly marked as an Oly lower, but it is a FAKE/FORGERY made by who knows....

Here are the details:

Cast lower
Serial number in the early "L" series (L followed by 4 digits)
SGW markings in the old "stop sign" tradition (preban style)
lower "pocked" with lots of surface divots
Lower has CAR-AR model markings
Lower has NO caliber markings
Lower has no city or state of manufacture as required by law
Lower says "OLMPIC ARMS" in all caps, but DOES NOT SAY "INC." after the Olympic Arms name.
Bolt catch ears for roll pin are round. Oly's castings were square.
Wrong size text.
Wrong font.
This lower is NOT an Oly Arms casting

Why bother? Anyway, keep your eyes out for suspicious preban Olys

Well, if they know their work sucks they might as well send it to someone who is used to dealing with fucked up guns.

Wow this is amazing, thanks for the heads up. I know that counterfiting things is not new, but I would have imagined they would counterfit something besides an OLY. Please keep us informed as you hear more

It has been too long since I have seen one, but I remember during the days leading up to the '89 Roberti-Roos AW ban in California, that SGW was sending out unmachined castings that had been marked and serialed so they could be logged out on a 4473 prior to the anticipated deadline.
When we got the first batch, we called Oly to ask "What gives?" and they said it was the only way they could fill the crush of orders and would complete the machine work after we sent them back.
The last batch we received looked like crap.
It took several months before they were all returned to the customers.

Those were such crazy times for them that they had everybody filling orders, including their accountant/bookeeper.

It would not surprise me at all if some of those crap castings were completed without noticing that the markings were also incomplete.

Not saying that the one posted above is not a forgery.
Just saying that I can see how it is quite possible that it might not be.

Like I said, it has been too long since I have played with an SGW, but I remember SGW lowers with lots of surface imperfections and round ears on the bolt catch ears. I remember the ears specifically because I used to use Channel Locks to squeeze in that pin and it would sometimes slip off that rounded ear.

Counterfitting a Oly is like counterfitting $1.00 bills:confused:
