Hey there, this is my first post on these boards, like what I see so far. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the ARs because I'm looking to build one in the next 2 to 3 months but I'm not really sure where to begin. I've read different ideas on what uppers are better and what lowers are better and all that sooooo... here's what I'm thinking...
A Colt upper with a Bushmaster lower. What do you guys think? I'm open to suggestions because I'm not sure what exactly I need to do. I want to build a mil-spec AR, that's pretty much all I know with a flat top upper.
Thanks for any and all help!

I think you need to come by the house so we can build you up a good one for far less money than that colt upper and bushy lower...lol!

since this seems like the thread for 1st posts :D ......
im pretty sure that the colt upper isint going to match up without special adapter pins.
afaik, colt changed their WHOLE setup when the laws were passed in '86. so, by definition, nothing you buy from colt will be "mil spec' unless it was made before '86.
im not postitve about this, as i never really looked into buying any colt parts, because, imo, why spend 2-3x the money for something when you can get a better product elsewhere.

Colt holes are bigger but most manufacturers will send you a lower that will match up if you order it that way.

IMHO, the main advantage to building an AR from scratch is using individual components.
Dream Carbine parts like a Rock River Lower, a White Oak 16" barrel in 1/8 twist, M4 R4 profile. a Geissele two stage fire control or a less expensive but still smooth Rock River two stage national match fire control. CAA's carbine stock. Yankee Hill flat top upper with a mid free float tac rail and low profile gas block. A set of back-up irons on the flat-top and a Yankee Hill rail mount pop-up front iron. An EOtech 3X Arms Mount swing magnifier and a 522 EOtech with GGG Pop-up covers and GGG lever mount for the EOTech. Top the barrel with a Yankee Hill Phantom treaded flash hider for a suppressor. a dream system of a M4
I'd have to think awhile on a long gun version... Lots of options on barrels and stocks. The forearm would have to free float. But I do like some of the carbon fiber stuff I've tried out.. An Ace stock? Magpul precision? Only thing for sure is a Harris bipod. Tried others. Keep going back to Harris...
