Oly is a US made product that makes all their own parts in house. In fact they are the only true manufacturer of AR style rifles.
Everyone else subs out some or all of its parts and assembles rifles.
Some rifle boards talk poorly of Oly, but Oly parts have been used at one time or another in almost all those other brands.
Oly SUM (Stainless Ultra Match) broach cut rifling barrels are the barrels that others are measures against as far as accuracy.
Oly produced firearms on the tight side of tolerances which makes them tight and they need to be broken in for a few thousand rounds. This tight tolerance can be seen in the magazine well and some magazines do not drop free. They are within Mil-Spec for tolerance and will function, some just won't drop free when the magazine catch is released.
If I had a choice between a used Colt for $900 and a new Oly for $650, I would always choose the Oly, and not just because Olympics political views.
Do not confuse Olympic Ammo with Olympic Arms.... Olympic Ammo is bad ju-ju.
There are conterfits of the older Olympic Arms guns that have made their way into the US... beware.
Newer (post '94) guns have forged aluminum receivers.(older "Plinker" model had cast, all other models were always forged).. some blog posts still say that Oly is using cast receivers.
My overall impression of Oly is they are just as good as any other major maker or AR rifles/carbines. There is a lot of trash talking about their product usually brought on due to their cheaper price tag. As far as accuracy goes they will hang with the best.
In the hunting world AR's they are actually the preferred rifle.

I do not have the rifle yet, so I can not look at it but what should I look for when I see it to tell is it is real or a fake
I paid 674 for it, standard AR configuration with a heavy 16 inch barrel

WHat do you mean "fake"? I've haven't heard of an onslaught of fake rifles being pushed about. And chances are nobody would fake an Oly anyway.

This is old news. These started showing up around 9/07

"I would not have believed it if I had not seen it.
Today Oly recieved in an M4 carbine for repair. The right side ear of the front pivot pin lug had sheared off. Upon inspection Oly found out it was NOT an Olympic manufactured gun OR LOWER!! The lower is clearly marked as an Oly lower, but it is a FAKE/FORGERY made by who knows....
Here are the deatails:
Cast lower
Serial number in the early "L" series (L followed by 4 digits)
SGW markings in the old "stop sign" tradition
lower "pocked" with lots of surface divots
Lower has CAR-AR model markings
Lower has NO caliber markings
Lower has no city or state of manufacture as required by law
Lower says "OLMPIC ARMS" in all caps, but DOES NOT SAY "INC." after the Olympic Arms name.
Bolt catch ears for roll pin are round. Oly's castings were square.
Wrong size text.
Wrong font.
This lower is NOT an Oly Arms casting
This IS NOT and Oly Arms lower, it is a FAKE, and at this time Oly has no idea were it has come from.
Lately the Oly sales and customer servie staff have gotten some odd calls about forged/cast question, as well as "pocked" receivers. While this is the first and only one Oly has seen, it is almost certainly not the only one.
BUYER BEWARE.
I will do my best to keep you updated with any new developments. Please send this link to as many AR owners and enthusiasts as you can. "

I picked it up today, called olympic arms and asked about the serial number and model number on it, they said they were good and the receiver had the lion on it, not a stop sign
so either it is real or a newer better forgery ;)

I put 10 rounds through it when I picked it up, 25 yard indoor range, everything worked right but I need to take it to a longer range for a real test
worst part is that I play WOW :)

Years ago I got blessed with an old Oly. UltraMatch. It was my first AR15 and the only one that I'll hang on to. I've been blessed with two deer with it. One of which was 286 meters away and never even knew what happened. Since that first deer I've added a suppressor to it and in doing so have added more fun to a great weapon. Oly. is a good company that makes a fine product. You've made a good choice by choosing Oly.. Enjoy.
